Discover how to optimize the performance and durability of genuine wood siding by avoiding these five common installation mistakes.

MISTAKE #1: Not fastening the siding properly
Proper fastening is crucial to ensure optimal siding performance. Always use the correct fasteners, apply the appropriate quantity, and place them in the designated spots according to your siding profile.
As an example, Maibec em+ siding requires TWO staples centred on each furring strip at a 20° angle with at least a ¾” space between them. Staples should also have a minimum penetration of 1″ in a solid substrate.

MISTAKE #2: Not doing all touch-ups
Always apply touch-up stain to all cut or exposed wood surfaces, even if they are not visible after installation. Do the touch-ups before installing the siding to maintain durability and appearance.

MISTAKE #3: Not keeping water away from windows
To prevent water or snow accumulation that could damage your siding, install flashing both above and below windows.

MISTAKE #4: Not respecting the recommended clearances
Maintain the required clearances between the siding and the ground, as well as between the siding and adjacent surfaces such as decks, dormer roofs, stone ledges, or other siding materials.

MISTAKE #5: Not allowing proper air circulation behind the siding
For optimal siding performance, leave an open cavity behind the wood siding so that warm air and moisture can escape and dry over time. Simply installing siding over furring strips is not enough—ensure airflow by allowing air to escape from the top and bottom of the wall. Without proper airflow, the siding may deteriorate over time.

Proper installation ensures your siding performs well and remains in great condition for years. Combined with regular maintenance, you’ll have a long-lasting, beautiful siding.
