Starland Supply has supported the Lakes District Fall Fair for the last 26 years. It is the annual event in our community, that brings everyone together. Gwyn and all the volunteers work tirelessly to put this on year after year. We would love to see them be awarded this grant, as this year is it's 80th celebration.

Lakes District Fall Fair

The Lakes District Fall Fair is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization based in Burns Lake, British Columbia, that works to bring the community together through events and activities. Its main focus is hosting the annual Lakes District Fall Fair, which celebrates local agriculture, arts, crafts, and culture while promoting community spirit, connection, and regional pride.

Nominee Details

The Lakes District Fall Fair began in 1944 with a simple goal to gather and celebrate agriculture, community, and the harvest. There have been setbacks. For two years we had to close due to Covid and wildfires in the area. Yet through the obstacles, the roots of 80 years have grown and expanded our fair into a much larger and vibrant one. Now our fair has state of the art buildings, a diverse number of events, and the ability to welcome and encourage connections between people of all ages and backgrounds. The most important part of these efforts is a warm and welcoming space to gather. Over the years, the fair has grown through the wisdom, leadership, and strength of our volunteers and participants. The Music Festival celebrates local musicians and performers. The Children’s Festival, a unique space, was created and has continued as a free interactive space for children to play, dance, watch live performances, and taste fresh veggies! The Exhibition Hall has created a vibrant space for art, creations, and projects. The Show Rings allow 4-H and other presenters to showcase their animals. Our larger Arenas have grown with an influx of horse events. There are also one day events like the stock dog trials and logger sports. We recognize and honour those who have left their mark on the growth and success of our fair. As we celebrate our 80th year, we do so with a commitment to continue to encourage opportunities for growth, learning, and fun!

How would winning the grant impact their initiative?

We will use these funds to create a special 80th-anniversary presentation; including a commemorative banner, a historical display featuring photos, stories, and artifacts, and a gazebo which will showcase highlights over our 80 years in words and photos. This milestone year offers a unique opportunity to honour eight decades of tradition that brings our community together in meaningful and memorable ways.

Isabelle is an acquaintance I met following a request for participation from Matériaux G. Ouellet for the Demoiselles de l'Est cause. Their mission is personally meaningful to me, as I have family members, friends, employees' loved ones, and clients who have been diagnosed with female cancer. The funds raised are distributed in the region, within the territory covered by our hardware store. I am not a board member, but they can count on my support for participation in their fundraising activities. Isabelle is one of the extraordinary volunteers who is enormously involved.

Isabelle Boucher is a committed woman whose generosity and dedication have been reflected for many years in her involvement within her community. A nurse by profession, shedevotes her life to caring for others, both in her work and in her volunteer commitments. A proud mother of two boys, she instills in them every day the values of mutual aid, respect, and social involvement. For 25 years, Isabelle has been actively involved in various organizations in the region. She served as an administrator for the organization Cam Drag, where she contributed to supporting several important initiatives. She sat on the parent committee, participating in the organization of numerous school outings and activities for youth. Always ready to give her time, she has volunteered for the 24 hrs du Mont-Castor event and was involved for over 10 years on the social committee of the hospital where she works. Since 2015, she has been wholeheartedly involved with Les Demoiselles de l’Est, an organization that supports women in the region living with female cancer. Her commitment to this cause reflects her deep compassion and her desire to concretely help those going through difficult times. Creative, resourceful, and always positive, she is known for her reliability and team spirit. When entrusted with a task, you know it will be carried through. Isabelle is someone you can count on, a warm-hearted woman whose dedication makes a real difference in the lives of many people.

What impact would receiving the grant have on their initiative?

This support makes all the difference. It will allow them to help even more people. Since its founding in 2009, the Les Demoiselles de l’Est committee, made up of volunteer women, has helped more than 500 women. When a cancer diagnosis is announced, many face significant financial difficulties, especially when treatments take place outside the region. For some, having to stop working further complicates their situation. Les Demoiselles de l’Est provide concrete financial support in the form of cheques, gas vouchers, grocery assistance, or help with other essential needs. This support is invaluable and the demand continues to grow.

Sharing Our Cultures Incorporated is a Newfoundland and Labrador–based non-profit organization that promotes diversity, inclusion, and cultural understanding among youth. It works primarily in schools, bringing together Indigenous, newcomer, and local students to share experiences, build relationships, and foster a sense of belonging through intercultural programs and events.

Nominee Details

Lloydetta Quaicoe is the founder and CEO of the non-profit registered charity, Sharing Our Cultures Incorporated. She was curious about the schooling experiences of children learning English or who have missed years of schooling due to war and living in refugee camps. Her study of the psychosocial needs of new immigrant and refugee school children found many experienced social isolation, racially motivated bullying, and difficulty making friends. Since 1999, thousands of school youth have participated in programs and projects that enhance their academic, sociocultural, and employability skills, while nurturing friendships and sharing their cultures with the public. These intercultural learning activities are free and encourage participants to embrace diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism. As immigrants increase, winning Hickey’s TIMBER MART grant will ensure continuing free relevant programs that impact the integration of newcomers. Lloydetta Quaicoe holds a Master of Arts degree from Memorial University and Doctoral degree in Education from University of South Australia. In 2023, Lloydetta received the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, from Memorial University and Patricia Cowan Award for supporting and promoting education from the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association. She was recognized with RBC’s Canadian Women Entrepreneur Award for Social Change in 2021 and received the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2019. Lloydetta volunteers on several boards and committees, including Memorial University’s Board of Regents, Community Sector Council NL, Chair of the OMNI East Advisory Council for Ontario and Atlantic Provinces, and Co-Chair of RCMP NL’s Black Engagement Steering Committee.

How would winning the grant impact their initiative?

My nominee at the age of 87 is one of the founding members of Langton & Area Minor Hockey Association in 1971. Long's Lumber has sponsored a team since 71. As a kid I was a certified Ref working under Roger who was for 15 years Langton referee in Chief. He has dedicated 55 years to kids and Langton area sports in several ways.

Since 1971 Founding member Langton & Area Minor Hockey: life member also served as President 4yrs, -vice 2yrs, -coach 8yrs. Referee in chief and head of Association for 15yrs. Timer keeper and announcer since 1971 and by the end of 2026 feb. he will reach 8892 games!! what a record amount. Still a working director of L.A.M.H.A.

How would winning the grant impact their initiative?

It is becoming harder for young Families to afford extra sports like Minor Hockey and this would help lower the cost over the next couple years and hopefully increase registration numbers which have been lower than normal the past few years.

Meet last year’s winner

Mona Aubry was the 2025 Local Leaders winner and was nominated by Yvon Godin TIMBER MART. She earned $18,000 for the Neguac Minor Hockey.

She used the funds to help kids have the chance to play hockey by covering registration fees, gear, and travel costs for families in need.
