Schreiber Terrace Bay Figure Skating Club

I am honored to nominate Regan Delorenzi for the Local Leaders Initiative Award. In 2020, at just 20 years old, Regan made the selfless decision to leave her home city of Thunder Bay and move to the rural communities of Schreiber and Terrace Bay to save a struggling figure skating club. Without a qualified coach, the club faced closure, but Regan’s expertise and passion breathed new life into it.

While balancing university studies in Kinesiology during a global pandemic, Regan demonstrated incredible resilience. Now, five years later, she is fully immersed in Teachers College, securing her future in our community. Despite her demanding studies, she continues to travel back and forth on treacherous northern highways to remain dedicated to her skaters.

Regan instills values of hard work, commitment, and sportsmanship, fostering a team mentality in an individual sport. Under her guidance, our skaters consistently reach the podium and even qualify for provincial competitions—an incredible achievement for a small club with limited resources. More importantly, she builds lasting friendships and confidence in her athletes.

A spectator at a recent competition remarked, “Not sure who the figure skating coach is for STBFSC, but those skaters are so, so good. Noticeably stronger than the rest of the pack.” This is a testament to her impact.

Regan’s passion and leadership have not only sustained our club but elevated it to new heights. Recognizing her with this award would be a meaningful way to show our deep appreciation for her tireless dedication to our youth.

How would winning the grant impact their initiative?

Winning a monetary award would have a tremendous impact on Regan’s initiatives. As a coach in a remote area, she faces significant financial challenges, with STBFSC anticipating over $42,000 in annual costs. With the club relying solely on registration fees and fundraising, there is little room for purchasing/updating equipment. Funding would allow Regan to invest in essential on-ice and off-ice training tools, update CanSkate equipment, access digital sports psychology resources, enhance club communications, and pursue professional development. The possibilities are endless! This investment would not only elevate coaching quality but also foster a supportive environment for the sport’s growth.
